1. INTRODUCTION
The Just
War Newsletter is an electronic publication to announce new developments
for scholars, teachers and practitioners whose work involves just war theory.
Written and published by Michael Kocsis, it serves anyone working in academia,
the public service, non-governmental organizations, and the military.

2. CONFERENCES AND EVENTS
The 2019 Conference of the International Society for Military Ethics
(ISME) focused on “Space War and Ethics”. The event was held in Colorado
Springs on June 29-30. It examined ethical dimensions of locating military

A conference on “Violence” will take
place from July 15-16 in Verona (Italy) under the auspices of the
research group Progressive Connexions:
Interdisciplinary Life. The event will be a space for inclusive dialogue to
understand of violence and strategies for dealing with violence. Details about

A graduate
conference on “Cosmopolitanism and Global Justice in Practical Contexts” will
take place in Munich (Germany) from July 26-27 at Ludwig Maximilians Universität,
München (LMU). Hosted by LMU and the Munich Center for Ethics, the event will
include keynote addresses by Laura Valentini and Anca Gheaus. Its goal is to
explore the range and depth of implications that follow from the cosmopolitan
principle that humanity’s moral sphere of concern should be expanded to include
all human beings. Jason Branford, Federica Merenda,

An International Conference on “Peace and Reconciliation in
Global Times” will be hosted from July 30-31 at Pakistan’s University of

A
conference on “Rights and Citizenship: Reconsidering Politics and Law in Light
of Contemporary Challenges” will take place in Berlin on 13-14 September.
Funded by the Einstein Foundation and the British Academy, the event will
examine multiple dimensions of the basic claim that human beings everywhere are
entitled to certain inalienable rights. The organizers are Ruhi Demiray, Alice
Pinheiro Walla and Ewa Wyrębska-Ɖermanovic.

An event on “Cultural Heritage and the
Ethics of War” will be hosted at Homerton College, Cambridge University, from
September 18-19. The event will explore the value of cultural heritage and consider
how theorists should conceptualize them in the context of the ethics of war.
Keynote addresses will be given by Simon Blackburn, Ruth Chang, and Victor

A
conference entitled “How to End a War: Peace, Justice and Repair” will take
place from 11-12 October at West Point Military Academy as this year’s Ethics of War and Peace Conference. The Ethics of War and Peace Conference
series is hosted annually by the Department of English and Philosophy at West
Point. Its objective is to bring together scholars, military professionals,
cadets, and students whose work touches on the ethics of war. This year’s event
will mark the centenary of the Treaty of Versailles; the theme invites
participants to explore challenges that follow U.S. wars in Iraq and
Afghanistan. The list of scheduled speakers includes Alex Bellamy, Nir
Eisikovits, Catherine Lu, Darrel Moellendorf, Coleen Murphy, Gen (R) John
Nicholson, Linda Radzik, David Rodin, Nancy Sherman and Lisa Tessman. Information

An
international seminar entitled “Satyagraha in the Twenty First Century: Social,
Ethical and Spiritual Dimensions in Global Pursuits of Truth” will be hosted by
the Council for Social Development (CSD) of the India International Centre in New Delhi from 22-24 October. The event
will examine the philosophy and methodology behind Gandhi’s Satyagraha campaigns in South Africa and
India in the realm of social movements and philosophies of the 21st century. Abstracts
of 250w should be received by 25 June will selected projects announced by 5

A
conference entitled “Machiavelli and Contemporary Politics” will take place in
Prague from 15-16 November as the 4th Biennial Ideas in Politics conference series. The aim is to explore Machiavelli’s
presence in contemporary political theory along with the implications of his
work on the contemporary political scene. The conference will be organised
by the Institute of Political Studies
at Charles University and the Anglo-American University in Prague. Keynote
speakers will include
Filippo Del
Lucchese, Jeffrey Green and Lawrence Hamilton. Abstracts for papers and panels

An
international conference organized by the University of Turin and Sereno Regis
Center on 2-3 December 2019 will commemorate the 150 anniversary of Mohandas
Gandhi’s birth. The event is meant to foster a critical debate on Gandhi’s legacy
among academics, peace activists, environmentalists and civil rights activists
inspired by Gandhian philosophies. Sessions on “Gandhian grass root movements”,
“Gandhian peace and civil rights movements”, “Gandhian political views”, and “Gandhi’s
legacy in present-day India” will be on the agenda. Those interested in
participating should submit an abstract for a panel or individual paper (max 300w,
with 3-5 keywords) and a brief CV to the following email address prior to 15

Results will be communicated by 10 September. The conference will open with a

An
International Conference on “Common Values of Humanity and Cross-Cultural
Exchanges” will be hosted by China’s Council
for Research in Values and Philosophy (RVP) at China West Normal University
in Nanchang from 2–3 January 2020. The event will consider the proposition that
peace, development, equity, justice, democracy and freedom are common values of
humankind and lofty goals of the United Nations, and yet they are far from
fully achieved and construed differently in Eastern and Western countries.

Journal Special Issues
A recent issue of the journal Peace and Change contains a number of
essays on peace and peacemaking in the current context of geopolitics (Vol. 44,
No. 2, April 2019). An editor’s introduction written by Davide Hostetter
precedes articles by Kimberly Jensen, Charles & Patricia Howlett, Zoe Knox
and Landon Hancock.
4. CALL FOR PAPERS
The Philosophical Journal of Conflict and
Violence welcomes submissions for a special issue on “Violence and Film”.
Edited by Chris Fleming and George A. Dunn, the issue will examine the
complexities of violence in film; how violence drives cinematic narrative and
influences the film industry. Numerous philosophical perspectives will be
considered including those connected to phenomenology, analytical philosophy,
non-Western philosophy, psychoanalysis, and others. Scholars interested in
contributing should send abstracts of 100-250w to Chris Fleming (C.Fleming@westernsydney.edu.au) and George Dunn
(FritFerret@aol.com) prior
to September 1. Authors will be informed no later than October 2019, with full

5. NEW ACADEMIC PROJECTS AND PROGRAMS
University
instructors who might be interested in sending students abroad for a semester
of international study in the Balkans should explore that possibility with the
newly-established International
Center for Governance Studies (ICGS) in Belgrade (Serbia), where
undergraduate students are invited to take courses in courses in political
theory, sociology, ethics and media studies, culture, political science, and
