1. INTRODUCTION

The Just War Newsletter is an electronic newsletter for announcements and new developments for researchers and practitioners interested in the ethics of war. Written and published by Michael Kocsis, it is designed for those who work in academia, the public service, non-governmental organizations, and the military. 2. CONFERENCES AND EVENTS

A conference entitleded “EFAK X: Disagreements” was organized in Tartu, Estonia from September 25-27, as the Tenth Annual Estonian Philosophy Conference. Organized by the Institute of Philosophy and Semiotics of the University of Tartu, the Keynote Speaker was Prof. Esa Diaz Leon (University of Manitoba/University of Barcelona). The theme for the recent annual conference of the International Society for Military Ethics (ISME) was “The Ethical Dimensions of Civil War.” The event was held at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, October 12-15, with a keynote address delivered by Kit Wellman called “A Moral Analysis of the US Civil War.” Details and a conference program are posted here:

Canada’s Conference of Defence Associations Institute (CDA Institute) hosted its 17th Annual Graduate Student Symposium on October 16-17 at the Royal Military College of Canada (Kingston, Ontario). Organized on the theme of “Canada’s Security and Defense Interests,” the Symposium brought together Canadian and international graduate students, members of the Department of National Defence and Canadian Armed Forces, for two days of presentations, discussions, professional development and networking.  

A Seminar on the Ethics of War will be held on Monday, December 8th in Room E339 of Frescati Campus, Stockholm University. This informal seminar will include two of the Stockholm Centre's Affiliated Researchers: Victor Tadros (Warwick), who will speak on “The Persistence of the Right of Return”; and David Rodin (Oxford/CEU) who will speak on “The Reciprocity Theory of Rights.” The seminar is open to all, but those interested in attending should register by emailing Jonathan Parry: jonathan.parry@philosophy.su.se

The Faculty of Law at the University of Ljubljana is organizing its second international interdisciplinary conference on “Responsibility to Protect in Theory and Practice.” The conference will be held in Ljubljana, Slovenia on April 23 - 24, 2015, and it will enable scholars in fields of law, political science, the military, and other fields to engage in interdisciplinary academic debate on the concept of Responsibility to Protect (RtoP). In International Conference on the “Workings of Democracy: Practices, Norms and Understanding” will take place at the University of Iceland from May 27-29, 2015. The Keynote Speaker will be Simone Chambers (University of Toronto). The conference will attempt to facilitate critical and conceptual analyses of democratic theory and practices, and to bring together perspectives on key issues such as democratic representation, accountability, political participation and institutional venues for deliberation. The Hague Institute for Global Justice will host a conference on “Human Rights and Justice” from June 8-10, 2015. Organized by Anji and Kurt Mills, the event is a collaborative effort of the Human Rights Sections of the International Studies Association (ISA), the American Political Science Association (APSA), the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR), and the International Political Science Association (IPSA). A Panel entitled “Feeling like a State: Producing Citizens in Theory and Practice” will take place as part of the 2015 meetings of the Canadian political Science Association (CPSA). The panel will attempt to bring approaches to public policy together with political theory to address the production of citizens and practices of citizenship. Abstracts of 250w should be received by October 29, and should be sent to the Conference Organizers at one of the following email addresses:

5. ACADEMIC PROGRAMS  

An Intensive Course on the Ethics of War will be hosted by the Stockholm Centre for the Ethics of War and Peace from February 2-6, 2015. Organized by Helen Frowe and Jonathan Parry, the event is aimed at upper-level undergraduates and graduate students. No prior knowledge of just war theory will be assumed, but participants will be expected to prepare with a set of advance readings. The course will be free of charge and open to all interested parties, for either ECTS credits or for general interest. Places will be limited, so potential students should contact organizers via email to: helen.frowe@philosophy.su.se. The course will be taught in English.

A workshop on analytic Just War Theory will take place at Jindal Global University (New Delhi) on February 28th, 2015. Co-hosted by Jindal Global University, the Stockholm Centre for the Ethics of War and Peace, and the Jack and Mae Nathanson Centre on Transnational Human Rights, Crime and Security, the Workshop is intended to be part of a larger project engaging with Indian researchers interested in analytic just war theory. It will be led by Helen Frowe (Director, Stockholm Centre for the Ethics of War and Peace) and François Tanguay-Renaud (Director, Jack and Mae Nathanson Centre), and key texts of contemporary just war theory will be assigned. Participants will be asked to prepare a brief comment for presentation.
