1. INTRODUCTION
The Just
War Newsletter is an electronic publication to announce new developments
for scholars, teachers and practitioners whose work involves just war theory.
Written and published by Michael Kocsis, it serves anyone working in academia,
the public service, non-governmental organizations, and the military.
2. CONFERENCES AND EVENTS
On January 15th an event at
LSE’s The Forum for Philosophy
considered issues that emerge from war. Speakers included Susanne Burri, Michael
Muthukrishna, Michael Robillard, and Joseph Maiolo, and Jonathan Birtch was the

A workshop on “Honour and Admiration
after War and Conflict” was held at Stockholm University from January 30-31.
The organizers were Alfred Archer and Benjamin Matheson and the event was
funded by the Society of Applied Philosophy and the Stockholm Centre for the
Ethics of War and Peace. Questions such as the following were explored: What
are the moral objections to admiring political leaders who have committed
wrongful acts? Do morally wrong actions undermine a leader’s “admirability”? Do
statues and other artefacts necessarily express admiration for those they
depict? How should we represent controversial historical figures?
An international conference on “Post-War Transitions in
Europe: Politics, States and Veterans (1918-1923)” will be hosted by University
College Dublin on March 28-30th. The event will consider experiences of
European WWI ex-service men and officers who contributed to creation of new
states and participated in the peace process. Information on how to register

The Jean Beer Blumenfeld Center for
Ethics will hold a conference from April 11-12th at Georgia State
University on “Humanistic Perspectives on Moral Injury”. According to some
accounts, moral injury is a form of personal trauma suffered after
participating in or witnessing acts that challenge deep values. This event will
be a venue for research by humanities scholars whose work attempts to theorize
this understanding of moral injury. Scheduled speakers include Ed Barrett, Saba
Bazargan-Forward, Rita Nakashima Brock, Neta C. Crawford, Joseph Galloway,
Linda Radzik, Nancy Sherman and David Rodin. The deadline for submissions has

An upcoming conference entitled
“Francisco Suárez: Predecessors & Successors” will be held from April 26-27th
2019, at Loyola University Chicago’s Water Tower campus downtown. This two-day
event will bring together worldwide scholars to examine how Suárez revives
elements of scholasticism and anticipates the work of later philosophers.
Confirmed participants include Brian Embry, Helen Hattab, Sydney Penner, Kara
Richardson, Tad Schmaltz, and Christopher Shields. Peter Hartman and Kristen

A world conference on “Citizenship for
Inclusive Societies” will take place in The Hague from June 26-28th.
Organized by the Institute on
Statelessness and Inclusion, the event will feature a keynote address by
Radhika Coomaraswamy plus a wide range of other international experts. For

Several sessions of the 54th
International Congress on Medieval Studies, taking place this May at Western
Michigan University, will focus on “The Medieval Tradition of Natural Law: War
and Peace in Medieval Thought”. The relevant sessions will consider a question
that has engaged philosophers for centuries: what constitutes a just war? They
will explore that fundamental question through the writings of Thomas Aquinas
and a recent book by Gregory Reichberg entitled Thomas Aquinas on War and Peace. The deadline for proposals has

The 9th Workshop on Military Medical Ethics, organized by the International Committee for Medical Medicine (ICMM), the Center of Reference for Education on International Humanitarian Law and Ethics, the Medical Services Directorate of the Swiss Armed Forces, and the Zurich Center for Military Medical Ethics, will take place from May 19-24th in Basel (Switzerland) at the Congress Center Basel. A conference on the topic of “Violence”
will take place from July 15-16th in Verona (Italy) under the auspices
of the research group “Progressive Connexions: Interdisciplinary Life”. The
event will provide a
space for inclusive dialogue to better understand of violence and strategies
for dealing with violence. Proposals of 300w for presentations and other forms

International Conference on “Peace and Reconciliation in Global Times” will be
hosted from July 30-31st at Pakistan’s University of Karachi. Those interested in participating

An event on “Cultural Heritage and the Ethics of War” will be hosted at Homerton College, Cambridge University, from September 18-19th 2019. The event will examine the value of cultural heritage and how one ought to conceptualize such values in the broader context of the ethics of war. Keynote papers will be delivered by Simon Blackburn, Ruth Chang, and Victor Tadross. Journal Special Issues
The journal War in History contains a series of articles of relevance to
newsletter readers (Vol. 26, No. 1, January 2019). Articles on recruitment, the
logic of neutrality, the experience of the Spanish Civil War, sea power and
security, conscription and genocide are included.
The Journal of Social Philosophy recently published a special issue on
“Frontiers of Responsibility for Global Justice” (Vol. 49, No. 3, Fall 2018).
Carol Gould is the Guest Editor, and essays by Mathilde Unger
and Juliette Roussin, Virginia Held, Kok‐Chor Tan,
Catherine Larrère, Corwin Aragon and Alison M. Jaggar, Andrea Sangiovanni and
Maeve McKeown are included.
The journal Civil Wars contains a number of articles of relevance to newsletter
readers (Vol. 20, No. 4, 2018). Articles on the International Criminal Court and
rebel forces, state building, securitization and de-securitization, and support
for violent conflict in civil wars are included.
4. CALL FOR PAPERS
An upcoming Special Issue of Revista Portuguesa de Filosofia will be dedicated to the
topic of “Medieval Political Theories” (Vol. 75, No. 3, 2019). Editors will be José
Maria da Silva Rosa and Álvaro Balsas, and the issue will examine a wide range
of topics and themes that emerge when Medeival political theory is considered
from a philosophical or theological perspective. The deadline for submissions

The Philosophical Journal of Conflict and
Violence (PJCV) welcomes contributions for a Special Issue on the
Counter-Enlightenment, Revolution and Dissent. Articles should explore reason
and rational modes of thought associated with the Enlightenment tradition and
related critiques of the Enlightenment project, both historically and contemporarily.
Prospective authors should send a proposal in the form of a 500w abstract to the
issue editor (contacts below) and andreas.wilmes@trivent-publishing.eu before
February 4th. The issue will be guest edited by David Edward Rose, and
selected articles will be published by Trivent Publishing in December 2019. For

5. NEW ACADEMIC PROJECTS AND PROGRAMS
Case Western Reserve University offers
a Master’s Program in Military Ethics. Designed for both military personnel on
educational assignment and advanced students seeking a one-year intensive
program on military ethics, the program gives students a foundation in moral
and political philosophy as well as international relations. This year’s
application deadline is April 5th. Full details about both this
program and Case Western’s graduate application process can be found at the

The Correlates
of War Project is an interdisciplinary venture designed to advance the
collection, dissemination, and use of accurate and reliable quantitative data
in international relations. Its data is readily cited, mapped and customized,
and quantitative international relations researchers are able to upload their
own data sets and draw on the data already available on the Project’s web
portal. The Project’s current data and details about how researchers can
contribute are available for viewing at the following website: http://www.correlatesofwar.org/
6. INTERNET RESOURCES
The website of the National Teacher Training Institute contains useful lesson plans and related resources on just war theory. The materials are designed for the grade 10-12 level and they cover five 45-minute teaching periods. Developed by Adrienne J. Kupper, the lesson plans are entitled “Is There Any Such Thing as a Just War? Examining War and Morality”.
The Carnegie Council for Ethics and International Affairs produces occasional podcasts as part of the series “Global Ethics Weekly”. A recent podcast is a lecture by Waleed Alhariri of the Sana'a Center for Strategic Studies, who spoke about the ongoing crisis in Yemen.
The Peace Operations Training Institute (POTI) has created (1) a newsletter describing their activities and (2) added a new series of courses to its on-line curriculum. POTI is an NGO based in Williamsburg, Virginia (USA) dedicated to the study of peacekeeping from a range of theoretical and operational perspectives.

The Applied Ethics Institute, based in the Department of Philosophy at Utica College in New York, publishes an electronic newsletter with upcoming events, publications, and calls for papers in scholarly areas related to applied ethics. It has become the premier electronic newsletter of its kind in North America.
